Bankview Neighbourhood Information
Set just to the Southeast of Calgary’s downtown area, the community of Bankview is a tree-lined community with plenty to offer. The neighbourhood sits between 17th Ave and 26th Ave SW and 14th St and 19th St SW. It has wider streets and larger buildings than compared to homes closer to the downtown core. The neighbourhood is much less dense than other downtown communities as well like Beltline or Downtown West End.
The population in Bankview is multicultural, a vibrant and eclectic mixture of people from many different countries. A good majority of the community chooses to walk, bike, or take public transit rather than use a car for transportation. One-quarter of the residents here are immigrants; first-generation Canadians. This builds its strength on inclusion and diversity, two key components for this neighbourhood. The median income is fairly low, compared with Calgary’s average, with 25% of the community holding a high school diploma. 15% of the dwellings in Bankview are single-family homes, with 70% of the people living in low-rise apartment buildings. The Bankview Community Association is a volunteer organisation that looks after its members with community-wide events. They organize Good Neighbour Awards to foster a positive atmosphere, host Stampede breakfasts to capture the Calgary spirit, and showcase public art to encourage community growth.
Because of its proximity to downtown Calgary, there isn’t much that residents can’t do. The bike trails along the Bow River are a popular pastime for many Bankview inhabitants. They can use these trails to pass by the city on well-maintained paths, perfect for walking, biking or running. Several open fields offer residents a place to play sports and have picnics in the summer. Other recreational facilities are available to the residents such as tennis courts and playgrounds.
The community sits alongside the famous 17h Ave, a mixture of ethnic restaurants, specialty shops, local businesses, and many unique stores. This shopping district is vibrant and full of culture, adding to the atmosphere of the neighbourhood. The central shopping district of Calgary, the Core Shopping Centre, is a few blocks away. It offers some of the best brands and most comprehensive shopping experiences in all of Calgary.
Not far down the road is Stampede Park, an iconic Calgary destination and home to the Calgary Stampede. Each year, the Stampede sees over 1 million visitors come to the downtown area, bringing a welcome injection of culture and money to the Bankview economy. The park is also home to the Calgary Flames in the Saddledome.
