Who Was Colonel Gilbert E. Sanders?

Gilbert Edward Sanders, 1863-1955, was born at Yale, British Columbia, the son of Edward Howard and Annie Moresby Sanders. He was educated in England and the Royal Military College in Kingston. He received a commission in the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) in 1884 and served under General Middleton during the Riel Rebellion. In 1884, he married Caroline Augusta Jukes, 1859-1938, daughter of NWMP Senior Surgeon Augustus Jukes. They had two daughters, Phoebe (Toole), 1890-1980, and Constance (Pearson), 1892-1982. He remained in the NWMP until 1911, and at various times was stationed in Saskatchewan at Maple Creek, Battleford, and Regina, and in Alberta at Calgary, Fort Macleod and Athabasca Landing. He interrupted his police career to fighting in the South African War, during which he commanded "D" Squadron of the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles. In 1911, he was appointed a police magistrate in Calgary. During the First World War, he commanded the 2nd Canadian Pioneers. He resumed his position as a police magistrate after the war, until his retirement in 1932. He was president of the Ranchmen's Club in Calgary from 1921 to 1923. (Courtesy of Glenbow Museum)

Character Education: How are We Connected?
At Colonel Sanders TLC school we proudly and intentionally celebrate our connectedness by learning the Seven Virtuous Ways of Knowing. On the first day of school, The Three Pillars of Respect were introduced by the Sacred Seven Puppets. Throughout the next few weeks of school, Elder Eagle is searching for students who are demonstrating leadership in Respect. On the next character assembly, these students are provided a pendant and highlighted to celebrate their connectedness through Respect. Each of the next character celebrations is introduced by celebrating the current virtue and then students are introduced to the traditional teaching by the Sacred Seven. These virtues are embedded into weekly lessons, through literature, videos. Students use their visual journals to demonstrate their conceptual understanding of these character virtues. The character board evolves throughout the school year with teachers having intentional lessons using this character board as a learning tool.
