Programs

We offer a well-rounded, faith-based education in a caring, inclusive and nurturing community to meet each student’s unique needs. In addition to core curriculum programming mandated by Alberta Education, we are pleased to offer our students a variety of supplementary courses, options, and services in collaboration with our many community partners. The values of the Catholic faith permeate all programming options within Calgary Catholic schools.

Kindergarten

The Calgary Catholic School District offers kindergarten programming within a faith-based learning environment.

Parents and children will experience a Catholic educational setting which focuses on:

  • Creating a school community that gives witness to the teaching of Jesus and celebrates diversity, inclusion and the permeation of Catholic values throughout all curricular areas.
  • Children being valued as precious gifts of God who are encouraged to reach their fullest potential.
  • Learning experiences designed to be developmentally appropriate in order to meet the diverse needs of children.

Kindergarten Registration

Registration is ongoing throughout the school year. A child who turns four years old on or before March 1 is eligible to attend kindergarten in the fall of that same calendar year. The child’s birth certificate should be presented at the time of registration. Contact your local elementary school for more information.

Full-day Kindergarten

Select CCSD elementary schools now offer full-day kindergarten. To register, your child must live within the school’s boundary area, turn four years old by March 1, 2018, and you must provide a birth certificate. For more information please contact the following selected schools:

  • Holy Cross
  • Holy Family
  • Holy Trinity
  • St. Bernadette
  • St. Damien
  • St. John XXIII
  • St. Martha
  • St. Mark
  • St. Peter
  • St. Rupert
Kindergarten programming

Young children benefit from programs that provide opportunities for organized activities and purposeful play through which children explore the world around them. Alberta Education defines the instructional time for kindergarten as the “time where direct child-teacher interaction and supervision are maintained.”

Kindergarten students are provided with a minimum of 475 instructional hours each school year. The following 10 guiding principles provide a framework for kindergarten programming:

  1. Childhoods differ depending on social and cultural circumstances
  2. Children’s development is influenced but not determined by their early experiences
  3. Children interact and learn in a variety of contexts
  4. Children are co-constructors of knowledge and partners in learning
  5. Children are unique and active contributors to their learning
  6. Children construct and represent knowledge in a variety of ways
  7. Children are citizens and active participants in school and society
  8. Children are active collaborators in and users of assessment
  9. Children may require specialized programming and supports to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes that prepare them for later learning
  10. Children and their families may need coordinated community services to meet their needs.

ISSP

We are fortunate to take part in an initiative called Integrated School Support Program which is a collaboration between Calgary Police Services and two Calgary elementary schools located in the Forest Lawn Community - Holy Trinity School from the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) and Patrick Airlie School from the Calgary Board of Education (CBE). This program will support children aged 4 - 12 years, their families and the community. The intent is to provide wrap-around service to students offering increased physical activity, nutritional support, access to increased learning and educational supports. Members of the Calgary Police Team will be in our neighborhood working to make our community safer and in our schools, building positive relationships with students and staff. Included in contributions from the police will be the S4 Program as well as the Multi-Agency Support Team (MASST). Each of these programs is designed to enhance both student classroom and social development.

We have a full-time physical education specialist to deliver a daily quality physical education program to students and increase physical fitness. Teachers will also take part in daily activities with their class. We also have a full-time psychologist to consult with teachers surrounding the academic, emotional and behavioral needs of students.

Several of the nutritional supports that will be offered to students are as follows;

  • The breakfast club will run daily beginning at 8:25. Students go to the lunchroom where they are seated at tables. Students can choose from cold cereal, yogurt, mini bagels, muffins, fruit, and cheese.
  • Hot Soup will be offered to students every Tuesday and Thursday. A variety of soups will be served.
  • Hot Meals will be served every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. A rotation of dishes will include chicken stir fry, lasagna, veggie chili, shepherd's pie, perogies, and macaroni and cheese. Sandwiches will also be served.
  • The Boys and Girls Club will continue to run an after school program out of our building.

The ISSP program hopes to help create a supportive environment in which each child can attain personal success both academically and socially.
