We offer a well-rounded, faith-based education in a caring, inclusive and nurturing community to meet each student’s unique needs. In addition to core curriculum programming mandated by Alberta Education, we are pleased to offer our students a variety of supplementary courses, options, and services in collaboration with our many community partners. The values of the Catholic faith permeate all programming options within Calgary Catholic schools.
The Calgary Catholic School District offers kindergarten programming within a faith-based learning environment.
Parents and children will experience a Catholic educational setting which focuses on:
Registration is ongoing throughout the school year. The Alberta government has brought in changes that will require all students who enroll in kindergarten to be five years old by December 31 of the school year. This takes effect 2020-2021 school year.
The child’s birth certificate must be presented at the time of registration. Contact your local elementary school for more information.

Young children benefit from programs that provide opportunities for organized activities and purposeful play through which children explore the world around them. Alberta Education defines the instructional time for kindergarten as the “time where direct child-teacher interaction and supervision are maintained.”
Kindergarten students are provided with a minimum of 475 instructional hours each school year. The following 10 guiding principles provide a framework for kindergarten programming:
Hockey Canada partners with the Calgary Catholic School District to offer an exciting optional program for students. This program is offered at the elementary, junior high and high school levels in select schools. Students have the opportunity to learn hockey skills, leadership, teamwork, and fitness during the school day.
These programs are run by certified teachers with extensive hockey backgrounds. Hockey Canada supplies resources and training to our teachers which gives students an advantage as they develop their hockey skills. Students have on-ice training up to twice a week with one off-ice training session as well. This program of choice is funded entirely by parents.
The MJSS Hockey Canada Program serves Junior High students from:
The Monsignor JS Smith Junior High Band program provides an enthusiastic, fun and supportive environment for students to continue growing their instrumental skills. Focus is placed on fundamental techniques and musical knowledge of the instruments, growing musicianship skills through playing more challenging and diverse repertoire, and becoming advocates and appreciators of the arts. We also place a great emphasis on the community aspect of the band, where everyone has a place to belong.
Through our school board, students are able to rent an instrument for only $100 and this includes any repairs that may need to be done and insurance.
Throughout the band season, students will have many performance opportunities including a Christmas concert, the Alberta International Band Festival, several liturgies throughout the school year and the final band concert. Students will also have the chance to participate in our overnight band camp in the spring.
We offer a Junior Band (grade 7 and 8 students), a Senior Band (grade 8 and 9 students) and a Jazz ensemble (grade 6-9 students).
