We offer a well-rounded, faith-based education in a caring, inclusive and nurturing community to meet each student’s unique needs. In addition to core curriculum programming mandated by Alberta Education, we are pleased to offer our students a variety of supplementary courses, options, and services in collaboration with our many community partners. Kindergarten

The Calgary Catholic School District offers kindergarten programming within a faith-based learning environment.

Parents and children will experience a Catholic educational setting which focuses on:

  • Creating a school community that gives witness to the teaching of Jesus and celebrates diversity, inclusion and the permeation of Catholic values throughout all curricular areas.
  • Children being valued as precious gifts of God who are encouraged to reach their fullest potential.
  • Learning experiences designed to be developmentally appropriate in order to meet the diverse needs of children.


Kindergarten Registration
Registration is ongoing throughout the school year. A child who turns four years old on or before March 1 is eligible to attend kindergarten in the fall of that same calendar year. The child’s birth certificate should be presented at the time of registration. Contact your local elementary school for more information.

Half-Day Kindergarten

Our Lady of Peace offers a half-day kindergarten program.

Kindergarten programming

Young children benefit from programs that provide opportunities for organized activities and purposeful play through which children explore the world around them. Alberta Education defines the instructional time for kindergarten as the “time where direct child-teacher interaction and supervision are maintained.”

Kindergarten students are provided with a minimum of 475 instructional hours each school year. The following 10 guiding principles provide a framework for kindergarten programming:

  1. Childhoods differ depending on social and cultural circumstances
  2. Children’s development is influenced but not determined by their early experiences
  3. Children interact and learn in a variety of contexts
  4. Children are co-constructors of knowledge and partners in learning
  5. Children are unique and active contributors to their learning
  6. Children construct and represent knowledge in a variety of ways
  7. Children are citizens and active participants in school and society
  8. Children are active collaborators in and users of assessment
  9. Children may require specialized programming and supports to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes that prepare them for later learning
  10. Children and their families may need coordinated community services to meet their needs.

Band

PRACTICING EXPECTATIONS

Parents: You should be hearing your child’s instrument being practiced at home every week.

Students: You should practice your instrument AT HOME AT LEAST 15-20 minutes every night at least 5 times a week.

REHEARSALS/EXTRA-CURRICULAR EXPECTATIONS

Students should expect to attend extra-curricular rehearsals this year that take place outside the school timetable. This is necessary for two important reasons:

◾It allows students from different timetable classes to come together as one large performing group

◾It gives us extra time to polish our music for school concerts and/or music festival performances

PARENT SUPPORT

Please support your child in the band program by ensuring that home practicing is occurring regularly in a quiet spot where they can listen and focus. Having a music stand at home is a great accessory to keep good posture.

Regular, consistent practice is crucial on band instruments to keep lip muscles strong and developed and to help percussionists learn the notes on keyboard instruments. Even just 15 minutes of good practicing per evening can produce great results! Practice time at school only is typically not enough and if a student doesn’t take the instrument home to practice, his/her enjoyment in the band could suffer as they will likely not progress fast enough on these challenging instruments.

The band program also needs parent support to thrive. Volunteers may be required throughout the year for various activities. If you are willing to volunteer and have taken or are planning on taking the volunteer course please contact Mr. Nicholls. Thank you in advance for your support.
