At our school, we believe the purpose of education is to challenge all students to reach their fullest potential. We strive to promote self-discipline, commitment, independence, curiosity, and life-long learning. Through an enriching and supportive academic climate, we engage with students in active and meaningful learning. The staff is dedicated to guiding students as they become productive citizens, who make responsible choices, respect and value diversity, and actively participate in their school and community.
The Traditional Learning Centre uses teacher-directed instruction and character education to foster reflective thinking, continuous learning, and responsible citizenship. It is a celebration of cultural diversity and commonly held values. The virtues-oriented school environment prepares students to meet the moral, technological, and global challenges of the 21st century.
We are "together" with our parents, students, the business community, and the academic community in providing growth opportunities to all. Every one of us is an individual with unique talents and needs, and Sir Wilfrid Laurier is a school committed to the individual growth and improvement of all stakeholders. A major goal for the staff is to build a sense of belonging for our students. We believe in creating opportunities for our students to achieve mastery in a variety of ways.
Go Lightning – Pride and Respect
We focus on a variety of virtues throughout the school year. We also believe it is very important to recognize students for their personal and class accomplishments, so students are recognized during our Virtue Awards assemblies. Each month, one or more students from each class will be recognized for their academic and / or character commitment, aligned with the virtue of the month. Classes also have the opportunity to host one assembly and share their learning during the year. Students may also be involved in character circles to reinforce societal values and provide students with opportunities to discuss issues and solve problems.
Our School Learning Team provides limited assistance to students who have been identified as having special needs. This group consists of the classroom teacher(s) and administration and when placement is not appropriate, TLC specialists from student Support Services may be included. If you have had your child privately assessed, please notify the school so that we may plan accordingly. Individual Program Plans (IPPs) will be reviewed at reporting periods with students, parents and homeroom teachers. Your input is extremely valuable.
