We offer a well-rounded, faith-based education in a caring, inclusive and nurturing community to meet each student’s unique needs. In addition to core curriculum programming mandated by Alberta Education, we are pleased to offer our students a variety of supplementary courses, options, and services in collaboration with our many community partners. The values of the Catholic faith permeate all programming options within Calgary Catholic schools.
The Congregated Gifted program, one of the various gifted programming options available in the Calgary Catholic School District, is designed for gifted students at the junior high level. It is only offered at Blessed Cardinal Newman School and St. Jean Brebeuf School. Students are identified as requiring specialized support to meet their unique learning abilities.
The Congregated Gifted program provides an opportunity for gifted students to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment that supports their individual needs. The program offers smaller classes and provides appropriate learning accommodations matched to individual student needs including compacted curriculum and independent learning opportunities. In addition, extension activities such as workshops, guest speakers and field trips are used to support and enrich the curriculum.
In collaboration with all schools, gifted students identified under the provincial student identification system at the district level are potential candidates for the Congregated Gifted setting. Students eligible for the program have the opportunity to register in the congregated setting in the spring of their Grade 6 year.
Hockey Canada partners with the Calgary Catholic School District to offer an exciting optional program for students. This program is offered at the elementary, junior high and high school levels in select schools. Students have the opportunity to learn hockey skills, leadership, teamwork, and fitness during the school day.
These programs are run by certified teachers with extensive hockey backgrounds. Hockey Canada supplies resources and training to our teachers which gives students an advantage as they develop their hockey skills. Students have on-ice training up to twice a week with one off-ice training session as well. This program of choice is funded entirely by parents.
St. Jean Brebeuf is the only junior high school in the Calgary Catholic School District that offers an Instrumental Music Strings Program. Students have the choice of violin, viola, cello, or bass as the main instrument. All students who study strings have the opportunity to play in the school orchestra and small ensembles. No previous music background is required, just a desire to play and enjoy making music. Strings instrumental rental fee is $100.00/instrument. Payment will be accepted with school fees in September – online or by cash or cheque.
The Italian Second Language provides students with the opportunity to practice their new language in a dynamic and interactive setting.
