Homes for sale near St. Joseph Elementary / Junior High in Calgary.

St. Joseph School services students in Grades K-9, whose families live primarily in areas of northwest Calgary, such as Mount Pleasant, Winston Heights, Tuxedo, Highland Park, Balmoral, Briar Hill, Rosedale, Crescent Heights, and Hounsfield Heights. However, we also provide a dual-track Year-Round program, that attracts students from the greater North West Calgary area.

The words of our mission statement clearly state the philosophy of St. Joseph School:

“Guided by the teachings of Jesus Christ and our Catholic faith, the core purpose of St. Joseph School is to educate the whole child – spiritually, morally, intellectually, physically and aesthetically – within a secure and supportive learning environment that encourages all individuals to recognize and achieve their unique potential.”

Parent participation is very much encouraged and necessary for our school community. We have parental involvement in the classroom, field trips, at-home activities, and extra-curricular programs.

Religion, while taught as a subject, permeates all aspects of school life at St. Joseph. Students participate in liturgical celebrations and masses throughout the year.

Our school belongs to the district Catholic Community of Caring. We promote the values of trust, family, respect, responsibility, caring, and faith. We are actively involved in service projects within our school community.

It is our hope that all parents and students find St. Joseph School an enriching learning environment. We invite our students to set high expectations for themselves, to be actively involved in their learning, and to actively participate in various school activities so that they can reach their full potential within our Catholic community.

Programs

We offer a well-rounded, faith-based education in a caring, inclusive and nurturing community to meet each student’s unique needs. In addition to core curriculum programming mandated by Alberta Education, we are pleased to offer our students a variety of supplementary courses, options, and services in collaboration with our many community partners. The values of the Catholic faith permeate all programming options within Calgary Catholic schools.

Kindergarten

The Calgary Catholic School District offers kindergarten programming within a faith-based learning environment.

Parents and children will experience a Catholic educational setting which focuses on:

  • Creating a school community that gives witness to the teaching of Jesus and celebrates diversity, inclusion and the permeation of Catholic values throughout all curricular areas.
  • Children being valued as precious gifts of God who are encouraged to reach their fullest potential.
  • Learning experiences designed to be developmentally appropriate in order to meet the diverse needs of children.

Kindergarten Registration
Registration is ongoing throughout the school year. A child who turns four years old on or before March 1 is eligible to attend kindergarten in the fall of that same calendar year. The child’s birth certificate should be presented at the time of registration. Contact your local elementary school for more information.

Full-day Kindergarten

Select CCSD elementary schools now offer full-day kindergarten. To register, your child must live within the school’s boundary area, turn four years old by March 1, 2018, and you must provide a birth certificate. For more information please contact the following selected schools:

  • Holy Cross
  • Holy Family
  • Holy Trinity
  • St. Bernadette
  • St. Damien
  • St. John XXIII
  • St. Martha
  • St. Mark
  • St. Peter
  • St. Rupert
Kindergarten programming

Young children benefit from programs that provide opportunities for organized activities and purposeful play through which children explore the world around them. Alberta Education defines the instructional time for kindergarten as the “time where direct child-teacher interaction and supervision are maintained.”

Kindergarten students are provided with a minimum of 475 instructional hours each school year. The following 10 guiding principles provide a framework for kindergarten programming:

  1. Childhoods differ depending on social and cultural circumstances
  2. Children’s development is influenced but not determined by their early experiences
  3. Children interact and learn in a variety of contexts
  4. Children are co-constructors of knowledge and partners in learning
  5. Children are unique and active contributors to their learning
  6. Children construct and represent knowledge in a variety of ways
  7. Children are citizens and active participants in school and society
  8. Children are active collaborators in and users of assessment
  9. Children may require specialized programming and supports to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes that prepare them for later learning
  10. Children and their families may need coordinated community services to meet their needs.

Year-Round Education

Year-Round Education (YRE) is a school year calendar formatted to more closely match the continuous learning patterns of children. The school year is balanced into four equal terms with students getting a shortened summer vacation and going back to school in August, a two-week holiday in October and an extra week of holidays at both Christmas and Easter.

St. Joseph Elementary Junior High School is a dual-track school. Dual track means that the school offers a year-round calendar as well as a traditional calendar. Our elementary students follow the traditional calendar, however, our junior high students have a choice between the traditional calendar and a year-round calendar.

Junior high students who live inside the school’s boundary may choose between year-round or traditional education. Out-of-boundary junior high students maybe admit to our year-round junior high program. Please call 403-500-2009 for more information.

With the year-round education track, children receive the same education as those on the traditional track. Alberta Education mandates that all students must receive the same curriculum and equal instructional time. In fact, for the majority of the school year, YRE track students and traditional track students study together in the same classes. A multidisciplinary approach to the core subjects, a variety of engaging programs and a special timetable allows for both tracks of students to learn, achieve and grow together.

In determining whether or not year-round education is the best choice for your child, consider the following questions:
  • Are you worried about your child losing interest?
  • Is your child forgetting some of their academic skills over the summer months?
  • Is your child bored and ready to go back to school in August?
  • Would you like family time and holidays during non-peak holiday seasons?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then choosing the year-round calendar track might best meet the needs of your family. Keep in mind that after you have enrolled your child in the year-round calendar track, we require the student to stay on this track until the end of the school year (June) since staffing is linked to the number of students in each class.
Program benefits
  • This calendar improves child behavior, attendance, and attitudes
  • The regular summer holiday is distributed throughout the school year
  • Eliminates the idleness of the two-month holiday
  • Helps improve the school climate
  • Reduces summer learning loss, time spent getting ready to learn and time
    readjusting to the school routine
  • Better matches the holidays of some parents and thus decreases absenteeism
  • Improves performance, especially for English as a Second Language students
