We offer a well-rounded, faith-based education in a caring, inclusive and nurturing community to meet each student’s unique needs. In addition to core curriculum programming mandated by Alberta Education, we are pleased to offer our students a variety of supplementary courses, options, and services in collaboration with our many community partners. The values of the Catholic faith permeate all programming options within Calgary Catholic schools.
Our school uses the "Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ program for Religious Education. Please call the school for the login information for this interactive faith program for students in Grades 1 to 3 and their families
The Calgary Catholic School District offers kindergarten programming within a faith-based learning environment.
Young children are proven to benefit from programs that provide opportunities for organized activities and purposeful play through which they can explore the world around them. The kindergarten program focuses on seven areas of learning, including early literacy; early numeracy; citizenship and identity; environment and community awareness; personal and social responsibility; physical skills and well-being; and creative expression.
All Calgary Catholic elementary schools offer half-day kindergarten programs and depending on total kindergarten enrolment, we may offer a choice of morning or afternoon classes on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Italian Language and Culture program offers elementary and junior high students enrolled in the program the opportunity to study Italian in addition to their regular program of study.
St. Maria Goretti School has a special focus on the Italian language. Students take Italian language classes from Kindergarten to grade 6.
In Division 2 students will have a choice between French or Italian language class. We are very fortunate to have exceptional teachers coordinating our Italian and French programs. We have teachers and staff that speak Italian and French and are able to help students in both languages.
We are not an Italian immersion school, meaning we do not provide instruction to students in all subjects in the Italian language. New students can register at any grade. If the new student speaks ”some Italian” that is great, if not, we will teach you.
Students will develop Italian language and communication skills and participate in various cultural activities.
Students in kindergarten will study Italian for approximately 45 minutes per week while students in Grade 1 to 6 will have approximately 150 minutes per week.
Carnevale is a special celebration event at our school. This school-wide annual activity has become a cherished tradition that students, parents and our community anticipates with excitement each year.
Every year we have special activities that focus strongly on our cultural diversity and highlight the Italian and French Cultures. This is a great complement to our Italian Language and Culture programs and supports our French as a Second Language program.
We encourage parents, staff, and students to come and participate. Our well-organized parent volunteers help us with this annual event. Students like to see their parents in the school and share their excitement.
Mask projects and the mask parade are fun for students and staff alike. We all dress up and participate. Please read more about the Carnevale in the newsletters.
Bienvenue à l’école St. Maria Goretti! St. Maria Goretti School is proud to be invested in teaching languages to our students. Our French program not only teaches students language basics but also immerses them in the culture of the language.
Students in grade 4 begin their journey in French by learning basic conversational phrases as well as written expressions that form the basis for future French language acquisition. Grade 5 students build on the skills acquired in grade 4 and are encouraged to speak more while learning basic grammar. Grade 6 students refine all the language they have learned in the previous two years and put it into more practical everyday usage.
We are very blessed at St. Maria Goretti School to be able to share language and cultural experiences with our students. French affords our students a uniquely Canadian historical and cultural perspective.
Starting Points class is a collection of 6-8 students from this area of the city who, for behavioral reasons, are in need of a specific educational setting. A Starting Point class has a very small pupil/teacher ratio; there are teacher assistants in the room and support at the District level from a behavioral specialist (consultant).
Students are integrated into regular classrooms according to their readiness. We have had great accomplishments with the program in the past years and look forward to continued success!
