Programs

We offer a well-rounded, faith-based education in a caring, inclusive and nurturing community to meet each student’s unique needs. In addition to core curriculum programming mandated by Alberta Education, we are pleased to offer our students a variety of supplementary courses, options, and services in collaboration with our many community partners. The values of the Catholic faith permeate all programming options within Calgary Catholic schools.

Kindergarten

The Calgary Catholic School District offers kindergarten programming within a faith-based learning environment. Parents and children will experience a Catholic educational setting which focuses on:
• Creating a school community that gives witness to the teaching of Jesus and celebrates diversity, inclusion and the permeation of Catholic values throughout all curricular areas.
• Children being valued as precious gifts of God who are encouraged to reach their fullest potential.
• Learning experiences designed to be developmentally appropriate in order to meet the diverse needs of children.

Kindergarten Registration
Registration is ongoing throughout the school year. A child who turns five years old on or before December 31 of the calendar year is eligible to attend kindergarten in the fall of that same calendar year. Example: to attend Kindergarten in the 2020/2021 school year - the child must be 5 years old on or before December 31, 2020. The child’s birth certificate should be presented at the time of registration. Contact your local elementary school for more information.

Full-day Kindergarten
Select CCSD elementary schools now offer full-day kindergarten. To register, your child must live within the school’s boundary area, turn five years old on or before December 31 of the school calendar year and you must provide a birth certificate. For more information please contact the following selected schools:
• Holy Cross
• Holy Family
• Holy Trinity
• St. Bernadette
• St. Damien
• St. John XXIII
• St. Martha
• St. Mark
• St. Peter
• St. Rupert

Kindergarten programming
Young children benefit from programs that provide opportunities for organized activities and purposeful play through which children explore the world around them. Alberta Education defines the instructional time for kindergarten as the “time where direct child-teacher interaction and supervision are maintained.”

Kindergarten students are provided with a minimum of 475 instructional hours each school year. The following 10 guiding principles provide a framework for kindergarten programming:
1. Childhoods differ depending on social and cultural circumstances
2. Children’s development is influenced but not determined by their early experiences
3. Children interact and learn in a variety of contexts
4. Children are co-constructors of knowledge and partners in learning
5. Children are unique and active contributors to their learning
6. Children construct and represent knowledge in a variety of ways
7. Children are citizens and active participants in school and society
8. Children are active collaborators in and users of assessment
9. Children may require specialized programming and supports to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes that prepare them for later learning
10. Children and their families may need coordinated community services to meet their needs.

JH Early/Late French Immersion

French Immersion

St. Michael School is proud to offer junior high students an early and late Late French Immersion Program starting in Grade 7.

Becoming fluent in French provides students with invaluable educational, cultural, artistic and professional opportunities. In Canada, 342,000 students are enrolled in French Immersion programs and the numbers are growing as second-generation French Immersion students enter school. These programs enable students to become functionally bilingual, gain insight into Canada’s French culture and heritage and to participate more meaningfully in our unfolding democracy. French Immersion program staff at St. Michael School endeavor to support and cultivate French-speaking climate both inside and outside the classroom and to provide enriched cultural and linguistic opportunities for our Immersion students.

École St. Michael School is very proud to offer our students the opportunity to pursue their International Baccalaureate studies in French. Starting in Grade 7, students can enroll in one of our two Immersion programs: Early French Immersion and Late French Immersion.

  • Early French Immersion: Students who are enrolled in our Early French Immersion program come to us having been educated in a French Immersion or Francophone educational program from Kindergarten or Grade 1.
  • Late French Immersion: Students enrolled in Late French Immersion begin their Core French language studies in Grade 7.

Objectives of Late Immersion Program
Full mastery and continual development of the English language, functional literacy in French, as well as an understanding and appreciation of the French culture are the primary objectives of our Late French Immersion Program. Please open the attachments to read more about what to expect when your child enters Late French Immersion.
